What I Like About You DVD: The Complete First Season

What I Like About You ended in 2006 after only four seasons. Episodes continue to be played in syndication in the early afternoon each weekday. The first season of What I Like About You is available on DVD and comes complete with 22 episodes, behind the scenes, and a gag reel. The DVD is available in Canada and US format only and was release in 2007. None of the other seasons have been released on DVD as of yet.

Season one is where we meet the characters for the first time. The series starts when Holly Tyler's dad tells her he is moving to Japan due to a promotion at work. Holly doesn't want to pack up and leave all her friends to go to Japan. She decides to ask her sister, Val, if she can move in with her. Val is an uptight, organized 28-year-old professional.

Throughout the first few episodes, Holly seems to cause more headaches than help for Val. Holly is a typical 16-year-old, and she has never had to think about anyone but herself. Holly is afraid if she keeps making mistakes, Val will send her to Japan. Val constantly reassures Holly that she loves living with her sister and it will take time to get used to one another.

Val is hard on Holly during the first half of season one, but she begins to realize that Holly needs to be her own person. Val has to work hard to find balance between giving Holly freedom while still laying down some rules. Holly and Val form a strong bond that will last them through the rest of the series.

Holly meets Henry and, though she is reluctant at first, they begin dating. Val has "the talk" with Holly, but Val has relationship problems of her own. Val's year long relationship with Jeff ends when he tells her he doesn't ever want to get married. Holly tries to set-up Val with Henry's older brother to pull her out of her post-breakup funk. The season ends with Val and Jeff seeing each other one last time and ending things for good.

The first season is great way to take a peek into the lives of Val and Holly as they struggle to work out the big changes in their lives. The first season is the foundation and is the season where Val and Holly truly become connected. This connection only deepens throughout the remaining three seasons.
